MeyGen’s Tidal Energy Project in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth on the north-east coast of Scotland is the world’s first multi-turbine tidal stream energy project. The location, between the mainland and the island of Stroma, is an excellent tidal resource. In its initial phase the project will produce 6MW from four underwater turbines. By the mid 2020’s Meygen hope to be generating almost 400 MW – enough to power half a million homes – from more than 300 turbines installed on the sea bed of the Pentland Firth.
